Atmosphere: Located on the east side of St Paul, Dari-ette is the local drive-in hot spot.   There are about 30 parking spots, each with its very own menu/ordering speaker.  Once you decide your order, place it with the waitress and he/she will bring it right to your car when ready.  Too messy to eat in the car? There is also a walk-up window and patio seating or a small selection of booths inside.

Menu: Appetizers include pasta salad, jalapeno poppers, chicken wings, garlic cheese toast, mozzarella sticks, french fries and onion rings.

Italian Specialties include Spaghetti or Rigatoni topped with Dari-ette’s Famous Sauce, the “Italiano” aka Hot Dago, Meatball sandwich, Italian Chicken Sandwich and Italian club.

American sandwiches/entrees include Deep-fried Chicken, Shrimp dinner, Fish and Chips, Hamburgers, Chicken Fillet, Steak Sandwich, and Pork Chop.

Ice Cream treats range from cones, sundaes, banana split, floats, slushies, malts and shakes.

Price guide: Appetizers $3-6, Sandwiches $4-6  Fried Chicken $11-22 Ice Cream $1-4

What I ordered: The Dari-ette Meatball sub. Three large meatballs on fresh, thick-sliced Italian bread, topped with homemade sauce and melted mozzarella cheese.  I thought the sandwich was good, but not the best I have ever eaten.  I liked the sauce very much, wish there was more of it than just the amount that spilled over.  The meatballs themselves were decent, but there was something about the flavor and texture that didn’t win me over…too many breadcrumbs, perhaps? I was also disappointed that for $6 it didn’t come with a side of chips or anything. I highly recommend eating this messy sandwich with silverware :)

Service: Very friendly.  I can imagine that on a busy night it might be slow placing orders and having food brought out.

Overall Impression: Great place to take the kids for dinner and an ice cream!

  1. [...] and along a drive-in theme, we stopped off 94 and White Bear Ave to order up some shakes from the Dari-ette Drive-In off Minnehaha Avenue in the St. Paul Dayton’s Bluff area. We backed into our spot and the kids [...]

  2. I have never eaten here before. But I know a few tricks. Dont use the coupons, dont order a burger and tell the manager to talk to the hand.. I hope to make it down there this summer..

  3. im italian and wouldnt go anywhere else other than my kitchen for food like this…
    ps. they honor my coupons.

  4. My family and I decided to stop into Dari-ette for the 1st time as we had just purchased a home down the street. We had a coupon from the neighborhood paper for buy one sandwich basket, get one at half price. We told the guy who took the order about our coupon and ordered a burger-ette basket and a coney dog basket. No problem. 10 minutes later a young woman came out and inquired about the coupon I showed it to her. No problem. She returned with our food and took my credit card. No problem She came back out, having charged my card, and said that we couldn’t use the coupon because the coney dog was not a sandwich (despite its placement on the menu under the word “Sandwiches”) Neither she nor the person who took our order mentioned this to us prior to charging us. I pointed out the menu and she went back in to check again and was told by the manager that we couldn’t use the coupon. Seems like a pretty poor manager that wouldn’t honor a coupon, wouldn’t handle such a minor problem themselves, and wouldn’t do what they could to keep a customer. It was our son’s first birthday and we wound up driving him over to Conny’s for his birthday ice cream. I’d recommend everyone patronize local institutions and keep our neighborhood businesses thriving but leave this place off your list.

    • They are RIP OFFS PLAIN AND SIMPLE….Not to mention they have the WORST customer service in addition to robbing customers!

  5. I’ve been eating at the Dariette for 23 years now. It’s one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever seen. Their pizza burgers are to die for not to mention their mouth watering chicken. If you’ve never been there you have to check this place out!!

  6. Hi everyone! I am a 4th generation of the restaurant- be sure to call on the hours as the do change during school time and the summer. We ARE open 7 days a week though- open at 11 and close at 9:30. Want chicken? Call ahead to order!

Come in and check us out!!!

  7. I had heard about Dari-ette’s from the TV in Arizona and have been waiting to try it. It is a must go. The Italian Style Chicken Sandwich is to die for. the best one I have ever had. The Cherry 7-Up was also a childhood reminder. Great service in a very clean eatery. So if near St Paul it is worth the drive to enjoy some great food.

  8. Growing up on the east side, the Dari-Ette has always been a vital part of summer for my family for over 30 years. There’s no place better if you want a cherry or vanilla coke. My parents still live up the street from this tiny St. Paul gem and whenever I am back home, we make a point to get a coney dog from the Dari-Ette. They have never claimed to be flashy or fancy. Don’t expect glitz and glamour, just plain ol’ good food.

  9. I have been going to the Dari-Ette since 1980′ish. I still make a point to stop by about a dozen times a season (matter of fact my wife is on her way there now!) :)… A MUST STOP!!!!

  10. I have been going to the Dari-Ette since I was a little girl in the 60′s. Now my children come along with me. They have the best Cherry 7-Ups in the history of the world. The food is also fabulous. My son gets the Italiano every time. I highly recommend taking a trip to the Dari-Ette. You won’t be disappointed.

  11. Great food the best italiano on earth

  12. 7 YEARS? BOY THAT IS A LONG TIME TO HOLD A GRUGE ABOUT A BURGER.TIME TO MOVE ON….

    • It’s not the burger that’s the problem, it’s the shitty customer service that is why anyone not friends or family with these idiots refuses to do business with them. They are rip offs, plain and simple!!!!!!

  13. The Dari-Ette has the best and most honest “Fabulous ’50s” ambiance of any restaurant I have been to in St Paul. As a long-time customer, the owners (same family since it was built in the early-1950s) have been nothing to nice to me, even when I was a bratty little kid!. The food is great, the staff is nice and it’s an extremely clean and well-kept place. Definitely the coolest place in town to take your ’55 Chevy (or 2005 Chevy) on a Saturday night.

  14. I HAVE NOT BEEN BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT IN ABOUT 7 YEARS DUE TO THE FACT, THE MANAGER WAS EXTREMELY RUDE TO ME. I CALLED THE DARIETTE BECAUSE I HAD AN UNDERCOOKED CHEESEBURGER AND POLITELY TOLD THEM TO MAKE SURE THE KIDS COOK THEM THOROUGHLY, WELL THE MANAGER WAS EXTREMELY RUDE TO ME!!! SAYING SHE DIDN’T BELIEVE ME, DID I SEE DR? HOW DO I KNOW IT’S THEIR FOOD?!?!? SHE WAS SO RUDE AND ACTUALLY HUNG UP ON ME! SO I HAVE NOT BEEN BACK THERE, I DO MISS IT BUT THAT SERVICE WAS NOT CALLED FOR AND IT WAS THE MANAGER!!!!

    • So back in September I bought a coupon for 1/2 price food, ($15.00 value for $7.50) only to find out that, unlike a typical DQ that serves food throughout the winter months, you close for the winter, and my coupon expires in February 2012!! I have two words to say “RIP OFF!” Will you be honoring these online deals when you open next season? If not, why would you offer a deal with an expiration four months AFTER you close, (and probably a month or more before you re-open!?!) I would just like to add that the website where I purchased this made no mention of your closing for the winter, it only gave an expiration, which is what I based my purchase on! They have since deleted all of my posts and requests on Facebook to honor their discount coupon that I paid for!~

  15. Fun place to take your classic car or truck. Meatball sandwich is really good, my 7 year old loves the rigatoni w/ spaghetti sauce and the chocolate malts! Look forward to going there each season!

  16. Maybe the texture/flavor that you were picking up on was due to the meatballs being deep-fried.
