Atmosphere: On the smaller side, Magnolias is a well-known diner-type restaurant serving both sit-down and take-out dining.  One of the most popular restaurants on the east side of St Paul to offer American cuisine.  Smoke free!

Menu: Open early, Magnolias offers a variety of signature breakfasts, including pancakes, french toast, and a number of egg/meat plates and omelettes.  All breakfasts are served with hashbrowns and biscuits or toast.  In the mood for a sandwich? Try either the reuben, chicken salad, pork loin, chicken breast, BLT, grilled ham & cheese, french dip or cod sandwiches.  Hot beef or hot turkey sandwiches are served over fresh bread and smothered with mashed potatoes and gravy.  I recommend starting any meal with one of Magnolias homemade daily soups.  Chicken wild rice or clam chowder are my favorites.  Entrees found on the menu include smothered chicken breast, country fried steak, pork chops, spaghetti, steak or Magnolias fried chicken.  Seafood items include shrimp, cod and walleye.  There are also daily entree specials (ex. meatloaf, beef stroganoff, chicken ala king).

I also highly recommend any of Magnolias homemade cream pies (banana cream or coconut cream are so amazingly delicious, you would never know they are made with Splenda).

Price guide: Breakfast $5-8  Sandwiches $6-8  Entrees $9-12

What I ordered: French toast with a side of bacon.  The french toast is thick, yet very crispy and buttery instead of eggy.  Served with powdered sugar, melted mutter and syrup on the side.  Delicious!

My companion ordered the 1/2 fried chicken with fries.  This is the most tender and juicy chicken! The breading is crispy and packed with seasonings.  Takes approximately 20 minutes to cook chicken (be patient, it is worth it!)

Service: Very friendly and reasonably fast.  Drinks are always refilled in a timely fashion.  Pictured here are two of Magnolias’ dedicated servers.

  1. I love this place. The service, the food, the ambience is what American food is about. Delicious! My high recommendation is the fish fry on Friday’s. And don’t forget the pies. The pancakes get my Golden Ladle for being what pancakes should be, thick and tasty.I love this place.

  2. Food wasn’t bad… but the tables are way too close together… I feel like the table behind us was eating right on top of us….

  3. The BEST fried chicken! Their wild rice soup is good too :)
Oh, and the Pies are to die for!

  4. I used to go to this restaurant a lot when I was a kid. I loved it back then and I am sure it is still the same today.
