Press Release from Parasole Restaurant Holdings. Minneapolis, Minn., March 13, 2009 –
Martini, margarita, caipirnha…every bartender worth his salt rimmer knows the tune to these classics, but the master mixers at Prohibition and The Living Room haven’t just reinterpreted the old standards – they’ve brazenly reinvented them. And the results are as dramatic as the venues that serve them.
Truth or Consequences
A pineapple/jalapeno margarita
Authored by Kate Bariss
Beginning with chile-infused Patron Silver, Grand Marnier and the juice of fresh lime, Bariss added Agave Nectar, muddled pineapple and cilantro to create a cocktail that preserves the balance of sweet, salty and citrus that well-made margaritas boast, but adds herbal elements and heat. “This is a cocktail with an almost Bloody Mary-like power,” says General Manager Brian Johnson. “That’s why we serve it with a Corona Pony.”
Why is called Truth or Consequences? After the town in New Mexico, Baris explains. But Johnson has a theory of his own: “Have a few of these and you’ll be blurting out the truth without regard to consequences.”
Bluphoria
A blueberry martini
Reconceived by Harley Gayle
In the cool light of the Living Room, the Bluphoria’s limpid color takes on almost otherworldly glow, but its ethereal flavor captivates, says Johnson. “Harley began with blueberry-infused Stoli Vodka, added St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, and freshly squeezed lime juice. It’s served straight up in a jumbo martini glass and garnished with fresh whole blueberries.
“Order the Bluphoria if you want to usher in the warmer weather, because the taste is at once fresh and floral, the berries providing a quality of sweetness that never cloys.”
Strawberry Cucumber Caipirinha
Brazil’s national cocktail
Reimaged by Paul Hoisser
A cocktail with a depth of flavor that verges on the culinary, Hoisser’s take on the caipirinha combines cachaca with muddled ripe strawberries and cucumber, and the juice of fresh lime. It’s served over ice and garnished a whole fresh strawberry.
“The astonishing quality of this cocktail is both the unity of flavors and the way they layer. You can isolate the strawberry, citrus and cucumber if you put your mind to it, or let them hit you all at once and taste something utterly unique,” says Johnson.
“And the color is intense – with the blood-red brilliance of the strawberries and the green of the cucumbers giving the caipirinha an almost hallucinatory color.”
The Truth or Consequences, Bluphoria and Strawberry Cucumber Caipirinha are available both in the Living Room and Prohibition at the W Minneapolis – The Foshay. The Living Room serves small plates and drinks from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11:00 a.m. until Midnight on Sundays.
