What we ordered: I had the two-meat combo with Catfish Fingers and Texas Beef Brisket. The four medium-sized catfish fingers were hot and crispy, fresh out of the fryer and seasoned with semi-spicy Cajun seasonings. It comes with to sauces to dip in, a sweet & sour type of sauce and a seasoned mayo tartar. I thought these were especially yummy with the seasoned tartar. The Texas Beef Brisket was also pretty good. This combo came with corn, a corn bread muffin and two sides. I love the corn bread at Famous Dave’s! It is more moist than typical corn bread and slightly sweet. I am not a fan of the overcooked boring corn, which is a far cry from the sweetcorn we harvest in Minnesota. The two sides I got were the garlic smashed potatoes and coleslaw, both very good.
My companion ordered the XXL Rib Platter, a 12-bone rack of St Louis Style ribs. The ribs were meaty and quite tender, full of smokey flavor from the Pit. The two sides were fries and cinnamon apples.
Service: The Forest Lake location of Famous Dave’s offers counter-service, and we were able to order within minutes of arriving. We got ourselves drinks at the self-service station and waited approximately ten minutes before our food arrived. Staff walk the dining room and check with guests from time to time to determine if they need anything, and bus tables when necessary.
Overall Impression: I really like the variety of menu choices at Famous Daves, although I think their prices are slightly high for the amount of food you get. They have several great choices of sauces and despite being a large chain-restaurant, I think they do have pretty decent barbeque (you can’t go wrong with the ribs!). What We ordered: My companions and I ordered a variety of pizzas, including this large Chicago-style deep dish pizza with pepperoni and sausage. Davanni’s deep dish is a treat for those who like real Chicago-style pizza and has been my one of family’s favorites for many years. The buttery brown crust is at least 1″ deep yet it is light. The lightness of the crust is deceiving because the pizza is actually very filling. The cheese and meats were baked directly on top of the crust with pizza sauce spread out on the very top to prevent the crust from getting soggy. The large pizza had 10-12 wedges.
Our party also ordered a Large Thin Crust Pepperoni Pizza. The crust on the thin crust pizza was also pretty good, crispy but slightly chewy. It was loaded with melted mozzarella and a fair amount of pepperoni (although I personally like more).
This is a solo deep dish pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms and “pink” sauce. Pink sauce simply means that it has both white sauce (garlic and olive oil) and red sauce. If you like garlic, you would love either the white or the pink sauce. This pizza was also very good, the mushrooms were fresh and there was a lot of pepperoni. The light and buttery deep dish crust practically melts in your mouth.
One of my companions ordered a half pizza hoagy on whole grain with a special request for the sauce to be served on side. This is a good sandwich but it doesn’t have much substance, just a thin layer of pepperoni and a thin layer of melted cheese on one half of the bread. You better order the whole sandwich if you’re hungry!
Another companion ordered a pepperoni and veggie calzone to-go. Safe to say that this thing was loaded with melted cheese, meat and veggies.
Service: You can call ahead for pick up or delicery, otherwise Davanni’s offers standard counter-service. There are typically 2-3 cashiers taking orders during the lunch and dinner rush but you can still expect to wait a few minutes before placing your order. It was fairly busy during my visit and it took about 30-40 minutes for our pizzas, which seems a reasonable amount of time for the deep dish pizzas to bake.
Overall Impression: Davanni’s has excellent deep dish pizza and is conveniently located in several places around the Twin Cities. Service is reasonably fast and menu prices aren’t going to break the bank.

What I ordered: I ordered the Taco Salad, which came in a fresh, crispy tortilla bowl. The bowl itself was on the small side, and was packed full of lettuce, seasoned ground beef, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, onions and fresh jalapeños, with sour cream and salsa on the side. It was so packed full of ingredients that there wasn’t enough room for me to mix the salad, but I thought it was really good.
One of my companions ordered the sandwich/soup combo, a Grilled Cheese with potato salad and side Caesar salad that they happily substituted for the soup. The bread was thick and buttery, grilled to a nice golden brown. The salad was a generous portion for a side salad.
Another companion ordered sandwich/salad combo with Grilled Turkey, Potato Chips, and Garden Salad. The chips they serve are of the kettle variety; crunchy and salty.
Another companion ordered a BLT with Waffle Fries and Seasoned Sour Cream. The BLT isn’t actually on the menu, but the restaurant was more than willing to accommodate the request since they had the necessary ingredients.
Service: My party arrived at the beginning of the lunch hour, immediately after the restaurant opened and we were seated promptly at our choice of table. The staff was friendly and more than willing to accommodate a couple of minor changes to the menu, such as substituting a side salad for soup in the sandwich/soup combo, and making a BLT which was not on the menu at all.
Overall Impression: Decent food with huge portions for the price. Service is prompt and friendly, great place to watch any of our local sports games.

Atmosphere: Located inside Rosedale Mall, Big Bowl is a large restaurant with a trendy Asian flair. There are several booths around the edges of the dining area and in the bar area, with many smaller tables within the middle. At the back of the restaurant near the kitchen is an area for make-your-own stir-fry.

Seafood dishes include crunchy sichuan cashew shrimp, Thai hot pepper shrimp with basil and peanuts, crunchy sichuan scallops, sweet ginger sea scallops and shrimp, and teriyaki glazed fresh salmon. Pad Thai is Big Bowl’s signature dish, try it with vegetables/tofu, chicken, shrimp or salmon. Big Bowl also has a make-it-yourself stirfry bar option. You choose your vegetables, meat, sauce, and noodles and they will cook it for you.
Price guide: Appetizers $6-9 Entrees $8-15
What I ordered: My companion and I started with an order of the veggie pot stickers (Classic pan fried northern Chinese dumplings stuffed with cilantro, green onions, crushed peanuts) It was also served with three dipping sauces, sweet and sour, plum and sesame mustard. Excellent choice! These pot stickers had a ton of flavor and excellent texture.
I wanted to try a curry dish and decided to go with the Panang Curry Chicken
(chicken, light peanut-coconut curry, peas, snow peas served over jasmine rice). This dish was packed with flavor! The sauce was indeed “light” if they mean “thin”. It was delicious, but I think would prefer it with a little more peanut flavor and if it were a tad bit thicker. The vegetables were very good, but the texture of the chicken was kind of slimy. I enjoyed the first ten bites or so and then got kind of bored with it.
My companion ordered pad Thai with vegetables. This seemed to be a hit! I tried a little bit of it and thought the noodles had good flavor. As you can see, there were a lot of veggies in the dish.
Service: The host staff was very friendly, as was our server. I think the server may have been new though, as he was not as knowledgeable about the menu as he could’ve been.
Overall Impression: Great ambiance and decent food.

What we ordered: Macaroni Grill always provides free loaves of their fresh, hot bread. Break off a piece and dip it in the olive oil provided. Delish! The texture is light, similar to ciabatta.
For my entree I ordered the Mama’s Trio, a sampler of the chicken parmesan, chicken canneloni, and twice baked lasagna. The chicken parmesan was very good, as was the lasagna (however the lasagna was warm at best, not hot). The cannelloni had nice flavor, but the outer shell was pretty dry and crunchy.
My companion ordered the chicken parmesan entree, served on a bed of angel hair pasta. The size of this chicken was magnificent! The combination of textures with the chicken and angel hair pasta was a big hit.
Service: The hosts and serving staff were very friendly and pleasant. Drinks and food served in a timely fashion.
Overall Impression: Decent Italian food if you like chain-style restaurants. Prices are comparable to other Italian restaurants of the same caliber, good service.

Atmosphere: Located within a large strip mall, Snuffy’s Malt Shop is reminiscent of an old-fashioned burger joint: The red and white striped wallpaper, the red vinyl booths, and the ice-cream counter. There are three small sections within the restaurant, all of which contain 4-person booths. There were a few small table sin one section, but accommodating a large group would be quite a challenge.
Menu: Snuffy’s is most famous for their hamburgers and malts! Burger choices include the basic hamburger, cheeseburger, California bugrer, or the Snuffy’s Burger (lettuce, bacon, tomato, cheese). If you’re not in the mood for a burger, try one of Snuffy’s grilled sandwiches (ham, chicken, cheese, etc).
Choose from over 20 Malt flavors or try an old fashioned soda, phosphate, or float.
Price Guide:
Burgers: $3.75-5.25 extra patty $1.50 (add $2 for fries or $2.50 for onion rings)
Grilled Sandwiches: $3.35-5.35 (add $2 for fries or $2.50 for onion rings)
Kids Menu $3.25
Malts: $3-4
What I ordered: Bacon & swiss burger with a side of onion rings. The burger was made of fresh hamburger, and was tender and juicy (a bit on the greasy side). Although the menu didn’t specify the size of the patty, I would say it was about a 1/3 lb. It came served on a grilled bun, but I wish the buns had been more thick and sturdy. I could almost detect a hint of sweetness to the bun as well. The onion rings were a big hit; nice and crispy. Of course I also ordered a malt… I went with the Snuffy Colada (strawberry, banana, and pineapple). Thick and delicious; heavy on the malt, just the way I like it. Could predominately taste strawberries (I wish it would’ve had more pineapple), but it was very flavorful.
*****************************************************************
Service: Very friendly. Despite how busy it was, Snuffy’s did a great job of finding us a table as soon as possible. Our server was prompt and courteous throughout the meal. At one point a malt glass at our table was accidently broken and management inquired immediately to make sure noone was hurt. Manager was very kind and patient while cleaning a very big mess from our table. Our experience also required a take-out order; everything was neatly packed and bagged.
Overall Impression: Fun, inexpensive place to come with a small group. Good burgers, even better malts!
